Sauro aces 9th at Rolling Greens

Published in June 10, 2004 issue of Straus Newspapers

Joseph Sauro, Jr. was all smiles when he registered a hole-in-one at the Rolling Greens Golf Club in Andover. A 10-handicap, the 65-year old was playing in a foursome with Tom Herd, Doug Kistle and Ron Pellek who witnessed the feat. Sauro used his seven-wood to ace the 167-yard ninth hole.

"It was a great feeling watching the ball go into the hole," said Sauro. "I am still excited about it."

Kistle is the Mayor of Franklin and the following day the same quartet played in the Partnership for Social Service Family of Franklin at Rolling Greens. Sauro captured low gross honors when he carded an 18-hole round of 77.

"If I had gotten the hole-in-one that day, I would have won a car," added Sauro. "However, all four of us won sleeves of balls when we dropped out tee shots on the ninth green."

In what arguably might be the longest hole-in-one recorded anywhere in the state this year, David Wallinger used his driver to register an ace at Rolling Greens’ par-4 fifth hole which measured 260 yards.

Franklin’s Bob Schumeyer posted his second hole-in-one at Wallkill in Franklin this year when he aced the 152-yard 11th hole with his seven-wood. Earlier in the year he aced the 13th hole at Wallkill.

Wallkill’s 11th hole was also the site of Mike Aiello’s hole-in-one playing with Jeff Hansen, John Insolera and Larry Smilan.

Jeff Stack aced the 133-yard, 15th hole at Crystal Springs in Hamburg using a pitching wedge. He played with Vito Amato, Dave Mirigliano and Mike Whitehead.
